Michael Jackson’s release of “Thriller 25” with six new songs was the #2 selling album in the US last week. The recording also sold in amazing numbers all around the globe.
#1 in France and Belgium
#2 in Germany, Australia, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland
#3 in the UK, Denmark and New Zealand
#4 in Spain
#5 in Austria and Ireland
#6 in Czech Republic and Italy
Sony Music is furious with Billboard for relegating the album to its catalogue chart for older albums instead of considering it as a new release. Even so, Billboard states that the album sold more than any other album on the catalogue chart in the last 10 years, scanning 167,000 copies and outselling releases by last week’s Grammy winners Amy Winehouse and Herbie Hancock.
Not bad for a pop star who is constantly referred to as “washed up” by most of the world’s media.
Update: Thriller 25 was #2 again for the week of February 19-24.
