‘Christmas Stays The Same’ with Linda Eder

linda_eder_christmasI’ve had this DVD for almost two years, and never really watched it until yesterday evening. I was listening to Christmas music on the computer and just happened to run across her name and remembered that I had the video.

This concert was filmed for Bravo and features Mrs. Eder singing several holiday classics, along with a few contemporary selections. After watching most of it, I wondered why it had taken me that long to really sit down and appreciate it. Her vocals are literally chill-inducing and the arrangements of her with a full band and choir are unique at times, but always beautiful.

I believe I was searching for different renditions of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” when I discovered her a few years ago, and I was immediately blown away. She definitely has a Barbra Streisand-esque quality to her voice, but says that it’s completely unintentional. I personally think she blows Babs right out of the water, and can’t understand why she isn’t a household name.

There is a CD taken from this performance, but it simply can’t capture the magic and emotion of seeing her break down on stage while singing a song her friend wrote about September 11.

Michael Jackson is still my king of pop

Alot of people wonder why I still like Michael Jackson. After more rumors, strange behavior, charges, and bad wigs than you can shake a glittered glove at, most of the population has written him off as pretty much crazy. Not me.

I agree that the personal life of this icon has overshadowed his artistry, but those songs, videos, and dance moves will always shine through the darkness. I can’t look at that sad visage without seeing the beautiful performer that I fell in love with all those years ago, and I can’t convince myself that the man who wanted to “heal the world” is some kind of child-molesting monster.

There will never be another performer on this level; one that combines the sound of music with such stunning visual interpretations, whether dance or video. Many have and will continue to try, but all will fail. You can’t reinvent the wheel, and you certainly can’t reinvent an entire genre of entertainment.

I wanted to post the lyrics of my all-time favorite MJ song, “Man In The Mirror”. This song has always stirred my soul, and you can see that Michael is having a religious experience while performing it, as well.

Man In The Mirror

I’m gonna make a change,
For once in my life
It’s gonna feel real good,
Gonna make a difference
Gonna make it right . . .

As I turn up the collar on my
Favourite winter coat
This wind is blowin’ my mind
I see the kids in the street,
With not enough to eat
Who am I, to be blind?
Pretending not to see their needs

A summer’s disregard,
A broken bottle top
And a one man’s soul
They follow each other on
The wind ya’ know
’cause they got nowhere to go
That’s why I want you to know

I’m starting with the man in the mirror
I’m asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself, and
Then make a change

I’ve been a victim of a selfish kind of love
It’s time that I realize
That there are some with no home,
Not a nickel to loan,
Could it be really me,
Pretending that they’re not alone?

A willow deeply scarred,
Somebody’s broken heart
And a washed-out dream
They follow the pattern of
The wind, ya’ see
Cause they got no place to be
That’s why I’m starting with me

I’m starting with the man in the mirror
I’m asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and
Then make that change

‘Always Be A Child’

It’s been a great weekend so far! We went out with Liz last nite and the food was fabulous. I’ve been craving a good steak for a while, and the restaurant certainly delivered. It was also nice to see her since we haven’t spent much time together lately. She wound up crashing here, but left before we got up.

We made it to church about 10 minutes late and there were lots of visitors. Linda sang a beautiful song titled “Always Be A Child” that had half the church in tears. I could tell it was dedicated to her daughter who left home and moved to Canada. You can really feel the hurt that she and her husband are carrying around with them.

The fellowship after church was great, and so was the smoked salmon that Sue provided. She also brought some really good doughnuts and I couldn’t resist eating two of them.

We went shopping after church and bought a few cat supplies and some clothes at my fav store… TJ Maxx.

Here are the lyrics from the song that Linda sang.

Always Be A Child
By Ray Boltz

I was there
When you drew the breath of life
And I could hear your voice
The first time that you cried
And though you couldn’t see Me
I was very near
And there’s something now
That I want you to hear

You will always be a child
In my eyes
And when you need some love
My arms are open wide
And even when you’re growing old
I hope you realize
You will always be a child
In my eyes

I was there the first time
That you prayed
And I heard
All the promises you made
And when you fell before Me
Crying, Father, I have sinned
I picked you up
And held you close again

CHORUS (repeat)

You better work!

Well, I’ve worked the last 7 days in a row and am very tired, but I won’t get a day off until next Saturday or Sunday… and even that’s a “maybe” at this point. I’m not complaining because I need the money, but I am very exhausted. I keep thinking of that famous line from RuPaul’s song “You Better Work!” and it keeps me going.

I remember watching Ru on VH1 during the 90’s when he had his talk show. I have always been entertained and intrigued by him, and wish he was a little more visible like he was back then. I guess that’s the Hollywood way; use them and lose them.

Hot mama

Oh my gosh, it is so freaking hot! Global warming is in full effect in Kentucky and across the nation. I am trying to stay in the air conditioning as much as possible. I feel very sorry for people who don’t have any way of keeping cool. I know there are a lot of them out there who either can’t afford an air conditioner or can’t afford the electricity to run it.

I just awoke from a nap, and have decided that they make me feel worse instead of better. I have always been that way. I get up in a fog and can’t figure out what time of day or night it is. Older people always seem to take naps, so I guess I’ll have to get used to them sooner or later.

Speaking of getting older, have you ever looked down at your hands or feet and not even recognized them? I have been doing that a lot lately. My hands startled me a few weeks ago, and today I was completely astonished by those strange, wrinkly feet that were attached to the bottom of my legs.

Life can scare you that way. Sometimes it feels like I’m being pushed in a direction that I don’t want to go in, but there’s no choice in the matter. Getting older is definitely better than the alternative, I guess, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t suck in the worst way.

hot_mamaWe saw Vicki Lawrence last night in Bardstown, and she did her hilarious “Mama” character, complete with the cheap wig and fat suit. The crowd loved it. I never realized that Vicki had such a large gay following, and it was especially surprising considering we were in a small town in KY.

That’s all for now.

Love – It feels great!

Cats – Blu peed in the floor last night, and it made me very angry, until I realized I hadn’t scooped her litter box the night before. After doing some research online, I realized that it is very important to do that every day, because cats are very particular about cleanliness.

Money – It’s tight right now. I’m trying to sell some things on Ebay to get a little extra cash. I haven’t done that for a long time, so it was a little weird listing items again.

Overtime – I’ve got well over 40 hours this week, and am working today and tomorrow, so that’s got to help a little bit.
